Bespoke Backlit Quartzite Feature Wall: Take a Look at Our Recent Project
At DAG Inter Ltd, we’re lucky enough to work on a whole host of exciting projects. From backlit glass to frameless glass bridges and glass balustrade stairs, there’s always something new for us to be working on. Recently, we did something a little bit different, and worked on a project that tapped into our design expertise. Though a lot of our work focuses on transparency and light, we also bring our creativity to bespoke interior features that transform the character of a space.
One of our most recent commissions was to design, build and install a bespoke backlit quartzite stone feature wall in a private home. The project challenged us to combine natural stone with precision engineering, along with modern lighting technology, to create a centrepiece that is both structural and artistic.
Bespoke Backlit Feature Wall: The Vision
Our client wanted more than a simple wall finish, they wanted a living surface that changed with light, creating different moods throughout the day and evening. Quartzite – with its unique mineral textures and translucent properties – was the perfect choice, and we quickly got to work. When illuminated from behind, it reveals depth, colour and movement that can’t be achieved with paint, plaster or even conventional stone cladding. When we heard that the client wanted
a statement piece that would anchor the room, whilst also adding a sense of sophistication and exclusivity to the home, we knew quartzite would be perfect.
The Process of Creating a Quartzite Feature Wall
- Selecting the Quartzite – We sourced two premium slabs of 20mm thick quartzite stone. Each slab was carefully chosen for its veining, tone and translucency, ensuring that once backlit, the natural beauty of the stone would be enhanced rather than lost.
- Water Jet Precision Cutting – The slabs were transported to our facility in Kent, where we used advanced water jet cutting technology. This allowed us to shape the panels with millimetre accuracy, avoiding any risk of cracking or unnecessary waste of the rare material.
- Reinforcement for Longevity – To add strength and durability to the backlit feature wall, we laminated a sheet of clear polycarbonate to the rear of the quartzite panels. This reinforcement ensures the installation will remain secure and stable while preserving the delicate translucency needed for backlighting.
- Lighting Integration – We installed high-performance LED lighting to provide consistent illumination across the entire wall. The system was designed to be low-energy yet powerful enough to highlight the stone’s natural details, showing everything from soft, warm evening glows to bright, dramatic highlights.
- Discreet Mounting System – The final step was installing the wall using a top and bottom channel system. This approach allowed us to secure the stone panels safely while keeping the installation clean and modern, with no visible fixings to distract from the beauty of the feature.
